Behavioral interview questions

MBB Consultant (McKinsey, BCG, Bain) Behavioral Interview Questions

MBB fit interviews are formal: McKinsey runs the Personal Experience Interview (PEI) on Leadership, Personal Impact, and Entrepreneurial Drive; BCG and Bain probe similar dimensions less rigidly. Stories must be 4-6 minutes, structured, and demonstrate measurable impact at the level of the dimension being tested.

What this role is graded on

  • Leadership of a team that wasn't yours by reporting line
  • Personal Impact: persuasion of someone senior or skeptical
  • Entrepreneurial Drive / Inclusive Leadership (firm-specific)
  • Quantified outcomes — every time

Question 1 of 5

Tell me about a time you led a team through a difficult moment.

Why they ask it: Maps to McKinsey Leadership / Bain Insight & Inclusion.

Situation

Team size, mandate, the moment of difficulty.

Task

Your formal/informal authority.

Action

3-4 specific moves — escalation, individual conversations, structural change.

Result

Quantified team outcome + individual outcomes.

Red flags

  • Too short (under 3 minutes)
  • No personal action — only summarizes group decisions

Question 2 of 5

Describe a time you persuaded someone senior who disagreed with you.

Why they ask it: Maps to Personal Impact (McKinsey).

Situation

Who, what stakes, what their position was.

Task

Why you owned changing it.

Action

Specific tactic — data, framing, sequencing, third-party validation.

Result

Decision change + measurable downstream outcome.

Red flags

  • Didn't ultimately persuade
  • Used authority not influence

Question 3 of 5

Tell me about a time you drove change against resistance.

Why they ask it: Maps to Entrepreneurial Drive.

Situation

Status quo, why it needed changing, who resisted.

Task

Why this was on you.

Action

Sequencing — pilot, coalition, public commitment.

Result

Adoption metrics + lessons.

Red flags

  • Top-down mandate
  • No measurable adoption

Question 4 of 5

Describe a major mistake or failure you've owned.

Why they ask it: Tests self-awareness and learning velocity.

Situation

The mistake + immediate damage.

Task

Your direct accountability.

Action

How you owned it publicly + what you changed in process.

Result

What's different now + how it shaped subsequent work.

Red flags

  • Humblebrag mistake
  • Blames context

Question 5 of 5

Why consulting / why this firm specifically?

Why they ask it: Fit screen — answers must show research and personal fit.

Situation

Your trajectory + the gap consulting fills.

Task

What about THIS firm vs. the other two.

Action

Specific people you spoke to, projects you'd want to work on.

Result

What you'd contribute back — a credible 2-year plan.

Red flags

  • Generic 'I want exposure to industries'
  • Couldn't name a single partner or recent case
